Spc. Franklin D. Barnett Jr. was found dead in his barracks room this week at Fort Sam Houston, where the 29-year-old soldier was serving in a Warrior Transition Battalion as he recovered from wounds suffered in Afghanistan, the Army said Wednesday.

The cause of death is under investigation, according to a press release from Brooke Army Medical Center. He is the third member of the battalion to die in less than three months, according to The San Antonio Express-News. The earlier deaths are also being investigated.

At least 11 soldiers with Fort Sam Houston’s Warrior Transition Battalion have died since the unit was created in late 2007, one of which was blamed on overmedication, the paper reported.

Barnett was awarded the Purple Heart in October. A native of Covington, Ky., he was a combat engineer assigned to the Louisiana National Guard’s 927th Engineering Company, the Express-News reported.

He is survived by his wife, according to the paper.
