On-base child care centers in the Kaiserslautern area are adjusting routines to keep children cool, and German schools are closing early this week due to extreme temperatures.

The German Weather Service issued a heat warning for Monday through Wednesday, with temperatures in Kaiserslautern expected to reach 96F on Tuesday and 98F on Wednesday, according to Weather Underground.

Despite the heat, child care programs on military installations remain largely unaffected.

At the child development center in the Vogelweh Housing Area, broken air conditioning was reported in an anonymous June 11 post to the KMC Spouse Group on Facebook. Now the facility is using portable air conditioners to keep rooms comfortable and is maintaining normal hours, a CDC official said.

Ramstein Air Base’s CDC is also operating normally, though outdoor playtime is being limited due to the high temperatures, a representative said.

International School Westpfalz in Landstuhl is dismissing students at 1 p.m. Tuesday and at 1 p.m. again Wednesday, according to a message to parents. All afternoon activities, including clubs and after-school care, are canceled on both days.

School-age care programs on Ramstein, Vogelweh and Kapaun Air Station continue to operate as usual. Parents will be notified immediately if conditions change, according to program staff.

Military families seeking relief from the heat can visit the air-conditioned KMCC Exchange, open daily until 8 p.m., or the Ramstein Commissary, open until 9 p.m.
