Elderly woman killed crossing train tracks with bike

An 80-year-old woman was hit and killed by a regional train Monday afternoon while pushing her bike over a rail crossing near Sambach, according to Kaiserslautern police.

The collision occurred around 12:20 p.m. along the Lautertal line at a level crossing for pedestrians and cyclists, between Otterbach and Sambach north of Kaiserslautern, police said in a statement Monday.

The train driver pulled the emergency brakes but could not stop in time, the police said.

Police are asking for any witnesses, including several passengers who were on the train at the time of the accident, to contact them as part of their investigation by calling: +49 (0) 631-369-14199.
