A 31-year-old woman in Kindsbach died in a house fire Tuesday, Kaiserslautern police said in a statement.

The fire broke out around 8:50 p.m. in a small house on Hoernchenstrasse and threatened to spread to neighboring houses, according to the Westpfalz Police Department statement, which said 10 people were evacuated.

Residents of the neighborhood include Americans, one of whom was treated for suspected smoke inhalation and taken to a hospital, police spokeswoman Christiane Lautenschläger said in response to questions.

U.S. military police were among the first responders called to the scene.

The father of the 31-year-old escaped the burning house, but the woman was found dead inside, the statement said. Her death and the cause of the fire are under investigation, according to police.
