The soldier who died during Army basic combat training at Fort Jackson last month was a 22-year-old from Anchorage, Alaska, officials at the South Carolina installation said.

Pvt. Gabriel J. Perez was found dead April 24, according to a Fort Jackson news release. He was assigned to Charlie Company, 2nd Battalion, 13th Infantry Regiment, a basic training unit responsible for running the Army’s 10-week course that turns recruits into soldiers.

The unit conducted a two-day stand down for its troops after Perez’s death, officials said.

Fort Jackson officials declined to provide additional details about the incident, including the cause of death. They said an Army investigation into the incident was ongoing.

The installation’s top commander, Maj. Gen. Daryl Hood, offered condolences to Perez’s family and the soldiers training with him in a brief statement.

“All available resources are being provided to his family and teammates, and we encourage anyone who is struggling to reach out for help,” Hood said.
