Persistent rainy weather has delayed construction of Kaiserslautern’s new city center, extending work on Fruchthallstrasse until late June, according the municipal civil engineering office.
The planned asphalt work for the next two weeks has been postponed to early June due to recent heavy rains. The installation of special embossed asphalt, critical to the project, can only occur under dry conditions with temperatures above 59F, officials said.
“We are trying to make the best of the situation in close coordination with the construction company,” said Jörg Riedinger, the site manager, in a Thursday statement.
The delay in opening Fruchthallstrasse to traffic also affects the start of construction on Burgstrasse, the northern section of the project. Preparatory work in the Serenadenhof plaza of the downtown Kaiserpfalz ruins is expected to begin in early June, requiring only the closure of the pedestrian passage along the historic Casimir Castle.
Full road and sidewalk closures for the Burgstrasse expansion, including the Martin-Luther-Strasse/Spittelstrasse junction, are anticipated by late June, with the entire project expected to be completed by fall 2025.
Construction will be divided into three phases to minimize disruption, starting with the section from Maxstrasse to Martin-Luther-Strasse.
