A tractor-trailer drove off the road on eastbound highway A6 Wednesday morning, causing significant delays in commuter traffic.

In an attempt to make room for a passing vehicle, the 35-year-old driver veered too far to the right, Westpfalz police said. The truck ended up in rain-soaked soil, where it became stuck.

The truck was carrying more then 7,000 gallons of non-hazardous waste liquid in its tank, necessitating some weight loss before it could be safely recovered, police said.

The accident and cleanup efforts jammed up traffic between the KL-East and Enkenbach junctions. The highway was closed in the direction of Mannheim for approximately three hours and traffic was diverted at the KL-East junction.
