School bus collides with bridge rail in hit-and-run incident

A school bus, operated by a 63-year-old driver, collided with a bridge railing on L502 near the B270 junction at Walzweiher on Monday at approximately 3:50 p.m., after evading an oncoming vehicle.

The incident, which did not result in any injuries to the schoolchildren aboard, led to an estimated 600 euro in damages, Westpfalz police reported.

The Mercedes bus was en route from Kaiserslautern toward B270 when it encountered a swiftly approaching vehicle. To avoid a collision, the driver swerved, hitting the bridge’s railing instead, police said. The other vehicle, possibly a white Opel Corsa or Ford Fiesta, fled the scene.

Following the incident, the bus driver managed to move the vehicle to a junction near Krickenbach, where the children were safely transferred to another bus without sustaining any injuries.

Police are asking anyone with information to contact Police Station 2 at 0631 369-2250.
