Accidents on Kaiserslautern roads rose in 2023 compared to the previous year, Westpfalz police said in a statement Friday.

The total number was 18,208, marking a 5.7% increase, or 982 accidents, from the previous year.

Out of the total accidents reported, 1,468 involved personal injuries, which represents a 2.7% rise from 2022.

Despite this increase, the Westpfalz police highlighted a 1.8% decrease in accidents compared to 2019, indicating that the number remains below the levels observed before the COVID-19 pandemic.

The majority of the traffic accident occurred within urban areas, with police citing inadequate safety distances and inappropriate speeds as the primary causes. The majority of fatal accidents involved at least one driver exceeding the posted speed limit, according to police statistics.

Young drivers and the elderly were major contributors to the rise in accidents, with these groups being involved in more than two-thirds of the reported incidents.

A third of the accidents were attributed to the influence of alcohol or other intoxicants, with a noted 3.5% increase in drug-related accidents compared to the previous year.
