Speeding crackdown on B270 nets multiple violations, fines

Approximately one in six vehicles was found to be speeding past a temporary checkpoint set up Monday morning on route B270 between Kaiserslautern and Hohenecken, Westpfalz Police said in a statement Thursday.

The checks only lasted for 90 minutes and recorded around 90 vehicles, police said. About 15 drivers exceeded the 70 kph speed limit on their way toward Gelterswoog lake, according to the report.

The highest speed recorded was 100 kph or more than 62 mph. The offending drivers now face fines up to 150 euros, and those exceeding the speed limit by more than 20 kph will also receive a point in the German traffic offender registry in Flensburg.

Additionally, one driver was penalized for using a mobile phone without a hands-free device while driving, resulting in a 100 euro fine and a point on their record.
