Afghanistan, March 9, 2012: Staff Sgt. Andy Carpenter, an Air Force joint terminal attack controller, surveys the scene on an air assault mission in Ghorak district, Kandahar province. JTACs, who embed with infantry units, played a critical role in Iraq and Afghanistan, coordinating close air support for ground troops.
