AUSTIN, Texas — The death of a Fort Hood soldier who was found unresponsive Thursday in his post residence is now under investigation, according to a news release from the Texas base.

Spc. Christopher Wayne Sawyer, 29, of Longview, Wash., joined the Army in October 2017 as a wheeled vehicle mechanic and has been assigned to Fort Hood’s 1st “Ironhorse” Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, since May 2018.

Foul play is not suspected at this time, though investigators with the Army Criminal Investigation Command have not completely ruled it out, according to the news release. No further information was released “to protect the integrity of the investigative process.”

“We send our deepest condolences to the family of Spc. Christopher Sawyer and the loved ones most closely affected by this tragedy. We are deeply saddened by the loss of any member of our Ironhorse team and we will mourn this loss as an organization,” Col. Michael Schoenfeldt, 1st Brigade commander, said in a statement.

Sawyer’s awards and decorations include the Army Achievement Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Medal, the National Defense Service Medal and the Army Service Ribbon, according to the news release.

He is survived by his wife and his young daughter, according to posts on social media.
