(Tribune News Service) — The fifth annual Cpl. Humberto Sanchez Memorial Honor Ride took place Aug. 23 in Indiana.

U.S. Marine Corps Corporal Humberto Sanchez, 22, was stationed in Afghanistan and aiding the withdrawal on Aug. 26, 2021, at the Kabul airport when a suicide bomber carried a heavier-than-usual load of about 25 pounds of explosives, loaded with shrapnel, into the departure zone. Sanchez and 12 other U.S. service members were killed in the attack. At least 169 Afghans were also killed in the blast.

The event in Logansport, north of Indianapolis, opened with a welcome from Sanchez’s mother, Coral Doolittle, who announced a new memorial foundation in Sanchez’s honor that will work to help those in the military readjust to civilian life when their duty ends.

Six Marines in Sanchez’s deployment group have since taken their lives after returning home.

Following Doolittle’s announcement, a long line of bikes arrived just after 1 p.m. They would return from their honor ride hours later for an evening of food, music and celebration of Sanchez’s life.

A semi trailer displaying Sanchez’s picture along with those of other veterans who had been lost was on display behind the Old Style Inn. Live music was provided by Decades and Plan B. There was also a bounce house set up for children.
