An explosive device has been detonated after being found on the property of a Navy base in Monmouth County.
The unexploded ordnance was found on Friday afternoon at Naval Weapons Station Earle in Colts Neck, the naval base said in a social media post. A shelter in place was ordered for multiple buildings on the base after the ordnance was discovered in Building C-11.
While the shelter in place was still in affect, members of the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Team detonated the device. In an alert about the controlled detonation, the naval base warned of loud sounds for 15 to 30 minutes.
After the detonation, the shelter in place was lifted and an evacuation was recommended for multiple buildings for safe removal of the device as it was disposed.
The naval base declined to comment further on the incident.
