WASHINGTON — A woman who ran into a city street and fell Monday night was killed by a commercial hauler transporting Army equipment used in the service’s 250th anniversary celebration, according to a defense official.

The semi-trailer truck was part of a convoy transporting Army equipment displayed during the celebration, the defense official confirmed Wednesday. The Army celebrated its 250th birthday Saturday, which included a festival at the National Mall and a parade of military tanks and vehicles through the nation’s capital.

The commercial hauler was traveling down New York Avenue in Washington at about 9:30 p.m. when 39-year-old Sierra Nichole Smith “ran into the roadway, stumbled, and fell in front of the semi-trailer truck,” according to the Metropolitan Police Department.

The pedestrian was pinned under the truck and dragged for several blocks, police said, before she was dislodged and struck by a 2007 Chevrolet Suburban driving behind the truck.

D.C. Fire and Emergency Medical Services attempted lifesaving measures. Smith was pronounced dead at the scene.

Both drivers remained at the scene. It is not clear if the convoy was at fault.

The police crash unit is investigating.
