SUPERIOR TWP., MI (Tribune News Service) — This year, Michigan’s largest airshow is introducing pyrotechnics, according to Event Director Kevin Walsh.
“When I say pyrotechnics, I’m not talking about fireworks. I’m talking about explosions, like fireballs.”
The Thunder Over Michigan Air Show is returning to Willow Run Airport June 20-22. It is the largest air show in Michigan, and it raises money for The Michigan Flight Museum, a 44-year-old nonprofit that preserves history and celebrates American aeronautics.
This is the show’s 27th year, and Walsh is excited to add explosions to the entertainment.
“This is something that’s brand new this year that we’re bringing to the show, and it’s always very popular,” Walsh said. “I’ve seen it many times at other air shows and people love things that blow up.”
Along with explosions, the show will have modern military acts including the Blue Angels and the Air Force F-22 Raptor. An announcer will introduce and explain aircraft throughout the show, but a full schedule of events and performers can be found at thunderovermichigan.org.
The entertainment goes beyond the show. Aircraft will be on display on the grounds and people can purchase tickets for a historic aircraft ride. Toys, easels and more will be found in the Kids Zone, open to children 10 and under.
“Even if you’re not into aviation, this is an entertainment event, and there is no shortage of being entertained once you’re on the air show grounds,” Walsh said.
Tickets to the show start at $95 and can be purchased online. Some types are already sold out. Walsh emphasized the rarity of seeing planes and pilots this close. Unlike many sporting events and festivals, Walsh said, the air show only comes one weekend a year.
“There’s only one air show, and that’s that,” Walsh said. “It’s that weekend and that’s it and you have to wait another 362 days for it to come around again.”
