(Tribune News Service) — A West Point custodian recorded cadets changing in the women’s locker room at the military academy, federal prosecutors said Friday.

Janitor Darryle Griffin, was caught after a cadet found a cell phone in her cubby with the camera facing the changing area on Nov. 17, 2020, according to a Manhattan Federal Court complaint.

Authorities searched the phone and found an app called Alfred Camera Application, which is used as a pet and baby monitoring, the feds said.

The program is installed on two phones and records with a motion sensor. The user can watch what is being recorded on another device.

Griffin admitted the found phone belonged to him, but denied recording women in the locker room. He claimed he only used the app to monitor his baby, the complaint said.

The cadet who found the phone said it was on when she discovered it. The display on the screen was consistent with what the Alfred app looks like in power-save mode, prosecutors said.

Griffin told investigators that he was cleaning the area and accidentally left his phone in the locker room.

“He places his phone the lower shower cubby behind the Cadets shower caddy for better acoustics when he listens to music aloud,” investigators said Griffin told them.

The custodian said he does the same thing in the men’s locker room, the complaint states.

Griffin was issued a violation for video voyeurism.

West Point did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
