(Tribune News Service) — An anti-jihadist coalition led by the United States killed Salah Numan, known as Ali, an Iraqi leader of the Islamic State group, during an operation in northwestern Syria.
Syrian state television reported, citing a security services source who referred to “an airstrike against a house in the city of Atme, in Idlib province” and describing Numan as “one of the most dangerous men, wanted for his involvement in activating and mobilizing ISIS cells in Syria”.
The coalition has not yet released any statements on the operation. Three witnesses, including the owner of the building where Numan lived, confirmed to AFP that the raid took place shortly after midnight, reporting hearing the noise of planes and gunfire.
State television reported that coalition forces raided the house where Numan lived with his mother and family, shooting him dead after he attempted to escape by jumping from the first-floor balcony.
An Iraqi security source, who asked to remain anonymous, told AFP that Numan was the brother of a senior ISIS leader killed in 2020 in a coalition attack in the Syrian province of Deir Ezzor.
The same source added that the operation was made possible thanks to Iraqi intelligence information, and that Numan’s wives were arrested.
