11:05 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 3, Japan time: Closest point of approach by Typhoon Koinu to Okinawa has come and gone, nearly 400 miles southwest of the island late Tuesday evening. Koinu has been downgraded to a Category 2-equivalent typhoon by Joint Typhoon Warning Center and remains on course to barrel through southern Taiwan at mid-morning Thursday. Unless it makes an unexpected turn northeast toward Okinawa, this is Storm Tracker’s final report on Koinu.
