YOKOTA AIR BASE, Japan — An airman with the 374th Airlift Wing was found dead Wednesday in Shimoda, a resort town about 2 1/2 hours south of this airlift hub in western Tokyo.

The wing announced the death on its official Facebook page Thursday afternoon. It provided no other information.

The airman was not identified pending 24 hours after notification of next-of-kin, which has already occurred, according to the wing.

“Today is a difficult day for Team Yokota,” said wing commander Col. Richard McElhaney in the post. “Thank you to our installation law enforcement officials and local community partners within the Shimoda Police Service for their assistance.

“Those affected are on the front of our minds, and our base support agencies are standing by to support members of the community suffering from this loss,” he said.

Shimoda, on the tip of the Izu Peninsula facing the Pacific Ocean, is known for its hot springs, busy port and long, sandy beaches.
