An airman assigned to Kadena Air Base and her dog were rescued by the Japan coast guard last week after they went missing in a kayak off Torii Beach, according to the coast guard.

The airman and her dog set out alongside three fellow kayakers at noon Friday from the coast near U.S. Army Garrison Torii Station and were separated from them 45 minutes later, according to a coast guard news release that day and a spokesman.

The group, unable to find the woman after a brief search, called the coast guard for assistance, the release said.

The coast guard dispatched a helicopter after receiving an emergency call at 4:20 p.m. from the Torii Station Fire Department, according to the release. A coast guard patrol boat picked up the kayaker and her dog about 1 ½ hours later nearly 3 ½ miles off Okinawa’s western coast.

The airman did not have her mobile phone while kayaking, the spokesman said by phone Monday.

The unidentified airman, who was not injured, was brought to shore in stable condition, he added.

Weather conditions were sunny, with 13 mph wind gusts from the east. A thunderstorm warning had been in effect, according to the release.

The 18th Wing and Torii Station did not respond to email and phone inquiries Monday and Tuesday from Stars and Stripes.

Some Japanese government officials often speak to the press only on condition of anonymity.
