CAMP FOSTER, Okinawa — An American teen remained jailed Wednesday on Okinawa on suspicion of drunken driving after rear-ending another vehicle at a traffic light the previous day, according to Japanese police.
The girl, 17, lives on Kadena Air Base but police declined to say whether her sponsor is a U.S. service member or Defense Department contractor or civilian employee. The 18th Wing did not immediately respond to an email seeking comment Wednesday.
Police arrested the girl at 4:40 p.m. Tuesday in Okinawa city, about an hour after the incident on southbound Route 85 in the Kaiho district, a prefectural police spokesman told Stars and Stripes by phone Wednesday.
No injuries resulted from the collision and the girl’s Honda Spark received minor front-end damage, the spokesman said. He declined to provide information on the other car and driver.
The girl, whom police declined to identify, had only a U.S. military-issued driver’s license that does not authorize driving off base, the spokesman said.
A Breathalyzer at the scene measured the girl’s blood alcohol content at 0.12%, four times the legal limit for driving in Japan, the spokesman said. By comparison, all 50 U.S. states have set 0.08 as the legal limit for driving under the influence or while impaired.
Prosecutors may receive the case on Thursday, the spokesman said. If convicted in a Japanese court, the girl faces a maximum five years in prison or a $7,000 fine.
Some government officials in Japan are required to speak to the media only on the condition of anonymity.
