The Sigonella Jaguars, a Division III team, won three-of-four season-opening road games Friday and Saturday against D-II clubs from Northern Italy.

Friday at Aviano, Sigonella swept to 8-7 and 14-1 victories as freshman Like Ostergaard made his high school debut in spectacular fashion in Game 1. He struck out nine in four innings of work, according to Aviano coach Dave Izzo.

In Game 2, Clay Coon struck out five in his three innings on the mound and went 4-for-8 at the plate to lift Sigonella. Senior Marco Summerfield closed, striking out two in a perfect inning of work.

Saturday in Vicenza, the Jags romped 10-2 in Game 1, but fell 14-8 in the nightcap, according to Cougars coach Mark Wilson.

Ostergaard went the five-inning distance in the opener, fanning 11, walking no one and surrendering six hits.

In Game 2, Peter Perry, who backed his own cause with a perfect 5-for-5 day at the plate, picked up the victory for Vicenza. He went four innings, allowing just five hits and striking our four.

Southern Region baseball goes into a spring-break hiatus. All four teams are to converge at Naples on April 29-30.
