CAMP HUMPHREYS, South Korea — Charlene Darson is better known for keeping balls out of the Kubasaki net.
On Wednesday, though, the goalkeeper got her chance to score and help the Dragons regain the Far East Division I title.
She scored in the 15th minute of the first half, and senior striker Solares Solano added an insurance marker later in the half as Kubasaki, the most decorated D-I girls soccer program, won its ninth Far East title, blanking island rival Kadena 2-0 Wednesday at Blackhawks Field.
“Charlene means more to our offense than our defense,” Dragons coach Chris Eastman said of Darsan, a sophomore. “She’s so good with her feet. She doesn’t make too many saves, but her ability to play the ball with her feet leads to many opportunities for our offensive players.”
Solano finished the season with 38 goals and has been the team’s chief offensive weapon the last four years.
“She’s just a rare combination of technical and athletic ability,” Eastman said of Solano. “She has the top speed to sprint right by you whenever she wants, make great passes or dribble by you.”
It was the sixth victory over Kadena for the Dragons, who achieved redemption for their defeat in the D-I final last year on Guam against American School In Japan.
Kubasaki finished the season 12-0-3 and has lost just one match in the last three seasons. The Panthers were trying for their first D-I title since 2006. They last played the Dragons for the Far East tournament title 21 years ago.
