UPPER TUMON, Guam – This Buck didn’t stop anywhere.

Like a Guam High track and field version of the Energizer Bunny, Hayden Buck just kept going and going and going. She won all four of her events, leading the Panthers to a sweep of the team titles in Saturday’s All-Island finals.

“Her ability to listen, learn and persevere. An incredible athlete to work with,” said longtime Panthers coach Joe Taitano of Buck, a junior who captured the 400, high jump, long jump and triple jump in Saturday’s meet at John F. Kennedy High School.

“She has made such a vast improvement in comparison to last year,” Taitano said. “Her preparation months before the season has a lot to do with where she’s at.”

Buck and Guam High’s girls won their fourth island team title in five seasons, taking back the crown from George Washington, which snapped the Panthers’ title streak last May.

On the boys side, the Panthers won the island championship for the eighth straight season, led by senior sprinter-hurdler Jayden Jackson and junior distance specialist Caleb Steele.

“Their eagerness to show up day in and day out to maximize their potential with consistency” led the Panthers to the team titles, said Taitano, 73, a 1970 JFK graduate who has been coaching on island since the mid-70s, most of that time for his alma mater.

Sophomore sprinters Destiny Blaize and Rai Johnson and seniors Christopher Angoco and Brianni Soto helped the Panthers to a sweep of all four relay crowns, something that Taitano said Guam High has worked on extensively.

“We take a lot of pride in the relay events,” Taitano said. “We’ve dominated the relays for years. A lot of time is spent on the different phases of the relays.”

The Panthers’ last event of the season is the Far East meet Wednesday and Thursday at Yokota, Japan.
