For a team thought to be rebuilding, defending island champion Guam High looked pretty complete Saturday.

Sean Sweet and T.J. Jenkins combined for four touchdowns and bookend defensive ends Theatris Eaton and Nijee Smith combined for 26 tackles as Guam opened the 2011 Interscholastic Football League campaign with a 42-0 drubbing of John F. Kennedy at Panthers Field in Jacob Dowdell’s head coaching debut.

“I’m very pleased with the way everything went,” Dowdell said, adding that the defense was what set the tone. “The defense was outstanding.”

Sweet completed four of eight passes for 106 yards and a touchdown and ran for 40 yards and two scores on five carries. T.J. Jenkins had just two carries, but for 68 yards and a score and was 1-for-1 passing for five yards.

Matt Eaton accounted for two touchdowns and an intereception, Daniel Morta recovered a fumble for a touchdown, Javon Jacobs picked off an Islanders pass and Eaton had 14 tackles - two for sacks - while Smith added 12 tackles.

While it was a season-opening tone-setting victory, it wasn’t perfect, Dowdell said. “We need to work on not making young mistakes,” he said. “Working on fundamentals and staying within yourself.”
