Washington, D.C., Dec. 10, 2010: Advocates of the repeal of the military's ''don't ask, don't tell'' policy gather outside the U.S. Capitol in protest, a day after the repeal effort died in the Senate.

The policy was finally repealed Sep. 20, 2011 and replaced with a new policy specifically prohibiting discrimination against any servicemember because of their sexual orientation. Then Joint Chiefs Chairman Adm. Mike Mullen said the day of the repeal that the so-called DADT law was "against everything we stood for as an organization, forcing people to lie to wear a uniform. We're better than that."
