BURY ST. EDMUNDS — Police are warning people to be wary of scam artists who visit their homes or offices and distract them to allow thieves to sneak in while they are not looking.

This happened to a pub keeper in Bury St. Edmunds last week, when a man visited the Linden Tree pub on Out Northgate Street and told a woman there that he had arrived to perform work. Police believe the man distracted the woman while a second man entered the office through a window and stole cash.

Police said distraction burglars in the area are targeting businesses and homes of elderly people.

Arrest made in robbery at Bury St. Edmunds ATMBURY ST. EDMUNDS — Police arrested a 23-year-old man from Bury St. Edmunds in the Sept. 23 robbery of a man at an ATM on Abbeygate Street.

The victim, a 22-year-old man from Elmswell, was robbed of his wallet about 4:45 a.m. on Sept. 23 near the HSBC ATM on Abbeygate Street, police said. He received cuts to the chin and mouth.

Police did not release the names of either man.

Woman arrested in nightclub fight that left one injuredBURY ST. EDMUNDS — Police arrested a 22-year-old woman from Bury St. Edmunds in connection with a Sept. 24 fight in Extreme Night Club on Kings Road that left a 26-year-old woman injured.

The victim was treated for cuts to the face from the midnight fight, police said.

Police did not release the names of either woman.

Police search for driver who threw rock from overpassWOOLPIT — Police are searching for a man who reportedly harassed a truck driver on A14 near RAF Mildenhall and threw a rock at him from an overpass on Sept 20.

A 48-year-old man from Felixstowe was driving a truck east on A14 through roadwork in Woolpit about 8:45 p.m. when a man in a silver Mercedes C180 flashed his lights from behind, police said. The driver pulled in front of the truck and slammed on his brakes while flashing the rear fog lights, police said.

The driver of the Mercedes then sped off and stopped at a bridge overpass, where he threw what appeared to be a rock at the truck. The rock cracked the truck’s windshield but did not injure the driver, police said.

Newmarket man attacked in parking garageNEWMARKET — A 35-year-old man from Newmarket was struck in the head from behind while walking through the Council Car Park on Rous Road in the early morning on Sept. 22, police said. He awoke to find money missing from his pocket, police said.

Police make arrest in death near RAF AlconburyHUNTINGDON — Police recently arrested a 22-year-old man in connection with a killing near RAF Alconbury.

Michael Austin, 20, from Huntingdon, was found dead in a street in Stukely Meadows in Huntingdon about 5:30 a.m. on Sept. 24, police said.

Austin suffered head and facial injuries. Police did not release details of the incident but inquired about a fight that may have occurred at a house party nearby that night.

Burglars steal cash from three pubs in one dayOXFORD — Police are searching for men who broke in and stole cash from three pubs near Oxford on Sept. 13.

Two men broke into the Turnpike in Yarnton, the Swan in Islip and the Blacks Head in Bletchington between 3:45 and 5:30 p.m., said detective Paddy O’Grady of the Kidlington police. They got in through living areas at each pub, O’Grady said. Police did not disclose how much money they took.

A worker at the Turnpike spotted one of the offenders and chased him down the road, O’Grady said. The suspect was described as white, about 6 feet tall, between 20 and 30 with a muscular build and dark tan, wearing a blue jumper and blue jeans and speaking with an Irish accent.
