TOKYO — While military bases in Japan provide tax assistance and filing centers, Americans also can receive tax help from the U.S. Embassy in Tokyo in April.

The embassy announced this month that a tax consultant will visit April 5-10 to help taxpayers. Since the embassy tax center closed in June 2004, no permanent IRS representative has been stationed here to help.

Because free 20-minute consultation appointments will be made on a first-come basis, the embassy advises scheduling an appointment as soon as possible. No personal electronic items are allowed in the consultation areas, so visitors should print out all documents in advance.

To make an appointment, call the commercial number, 03-3224-5174.

The deadline for filing tax returns is April 15. Americans living overseas automatically are granted an extension to June 15.

People also can file Form 4868 to receive a six-month extension from the April deadline. However, the IRS cautions taxpayers that if any tax money is owed the government, payments still are due by April 15.
