KAISERSLAUTERN, Germany — About 20 students at Sembach Middle School were evacuated Friday afternoon to local medical facilities as a precaution after a chemical fire extinguisher accidentally discharged at the school, according to Department of Defense Dependents Schools-Europe officials.
The students were taken to Landstuhl Regional Medical Center and the Westpfalz Klinikum in Kaiserslautern, a DODDS-Europe news release said.
At this time, it’s not believed any students were injured, DODDS-Europe spokesman Bob Purtiman said Friday afternoon. It’s not known why the extinguisher released its contents, Purtiman said, adding the incident, which occurred near the school gymnasium, is under investigation.
The U.S. Army Garrison Kaiserslautern fire department and the German Red Cross responded to the incident.
DODDS-Europe officials said they’ve accounted for all students and have contacted the parents of all children affected.
