Okinawa police call for charge against sergeant
Okinawa police have referred a fatal traffic incident involving a U.S. soldier to the Naha public prosecutor’s office.
Police on Monday recommended a vehicular manslaughter charge against Sgt. Clyde A. Gunn, 27, alleging that he struck a 66-year-old Yomitan man while traveling at a speed of 34 miles per hour, according to a spokesman for Okinawa prefectural police in Kadena Town.
Police are still investigating whether to add a charge of hit-and-run, the spokesman said.
On Monday, police also formally informed the military of the crime, a procedure required under the status of forces agreement.
Gunn has been in military custody on Torii Station since he was identified as a suspect in the Nov. 7 incident.
