The aircraft carrier USS Nimitz returned to its Everett, Wash., homeport Monday after an 8 1/2-month deployment in which it traveled more than 80,000 nautical miles. On its journey, the ship steamed through the Pacific and Indian Oceans, and went as far as the Mediterranean Sea where it conducted joint training with allied nations.
More notably, the Nimitz spent time in the Red Sea, where it kept U.S. options open after the use of chemical weapons by the Syrian regime on its people prompted speculation about a potential U.S.-led military strike.
