AVIANO AIR BASE, Italy — Students in Vicenza, Italy, are set to return to classes Thursday, two days after the base schools were closed when heavy rain flooded area roads.

A storm that started early Sunday dumped almost 10 inches of rain across northern Italy, causing floods, mudslides and forcing thousands from their homes. Most services at the Army base also were closed for part of Monday and on Tuesday.

The garrison has donated about 5,200 sand bags to Italian Army units to help in flood efforts around the area, said Grant Sattler, public affairs officer for U.S. Army Garrison Vicenza.
