The Philippines and the United States have signed an agreement that outlines military exercises and counterterrorism training for the coming year, a U.S. Pacific Command spokesman confirmed Friday.

The agreement was signed by Lt. Gen. Victor S. Ibrado, chief of staff of the Philippine armed forces, and PACOM commander Adm. Timothy J. Keating.

The U.S. will continue to help the Philippines fight against terrorism in Mindanao, PACOM officials said.

The U.S. military also agreed to help install radar stations on sea borders to help track terrorists.

University offering graduate scholarshipsThe University of Phoenix, Asia-Pacific Military Campus, is offering eight scholarships worth $8,000 each for graduate-level work, according to a news release.

All active-duty servicemembers, family members and others under the status of forces agreement are eligible for the merit-based awards.

The scholarships are for students earning a Master of Business administration or Master of Education degree at the University of Phoenix.

Online students are not eligible for the money.

The application process closes Oct. 9. Awards will be granted Nov. 30.

Guam base gate to be closed for utility workThe main gate of U.S. Naval Base Guam will be closed from 7 p.m. to 5:30 a.m. daily through Friday for a utility construction project.

The project involves burying power lines, according to a news release.

Drivers can use the back gate from 3 p.m. to 8 a.m.
