RAF LAKENHEATH, England — Two airmen died and five other people were injured Saturday night when the two vehicles they were in collided on a road near this base.

Staff Sgt. Mark Stephany, 24, and Senior Airman Daniel Addabbo, 23, died at the scene. Senior Airman Joseph Mann and Airman 1st Class Joseph Ross were treated at a nearby hospital for minor injuries, according to British police reports.

The four men, all with the 48th Maintenance Squadron, were traveling northbound in a BMW when it collided head-on with a southbound Nissan Primera.

A passenger in the Nissan was taken to the hospital and listed in critical condition Monday. Another passenger and the driver were in stable condition in the hospital, said Lisa Crane, spokeswoman for the Suffolk Constabulary, the British police authority investigating the accident.

A 2-year-old boy in the Nissan escaped the crash unharmed, Crane said. Insurance details show the driver of the car was from Suffolk, she said.

Authorities said it was unclear what caused the accident, which occurred about 7:30 p.m. on the A1101, which connects RAFs Lakenheath and Mildenhall with nearby Bury St. Edmunds, a community with scores of Americans connected to the U.S. military.

Anyone who witnessed the crash or has more details is asked to call the Suffolk Constabulary at 01473 0613500.

“We extend our heartfelt condolences to the families and friends of Sergeant Stephany and Senior Airman Addabbo,” Col. Jay Silveria, 48th Fighter Wing commander, said in a press release issued by the base.

Memorial services for Stephany and Addabbo are scheduled for later this week, according to a base spokesman.
