Drivers cautioned about Lunar New Year safetyYONGSAN GARRISON, South Korea — U.S. Army Garrison Yongsan officials are warning drivers to expect longer travel times and "red" road conditions during Jan. 23-28 Lunar New Year holiday.
Garrison commander Col. Dave Hall said in a news release that about 30 million people — almost a fourth of the country’s population — are expected to be on the roads during the holiday. He said travel could take as much as three times longer than normal.
"Because of this huge influx in travel, we need to be extra vigilant about traffic safety," Hall said in the release. "If you’re planning to travel, expect heavy traffic and long delays." According to the release, 56 people were killed and 3,015 suffered injuries in the more than 1,500 traffic accidents that occurred during the holiday last year.
Among precautions Hall said he will take is declaring road conditions "red," meaning only emergency and essential business vehicles will be allowed on the roads with permission of a lieutenant colonel or higher.
Hall also urged people to limit personal driving and reminded motorists that the legal blood alcohol limit in Korea is .05 percent.
