Protest planned at Bosingak Bell ceremonyU.S. Forces Korea personnel are "strongly encouraged" to avoid a traditional New Year’s ceremony in the heart of Seoul because of a planned 3,000-person protest.

The warning, posted on www.usfk.mil, states that The National Committee for Democracy and Public Welfare will gather at 7 p.m. Wednesday near the Bosingak Bell to protest the Korea-U.S. Free Trade Agreement and other issues.

Huge crowds pack the street each New Year’s Eve near the U.S. Embassy for a ceremony in which the bell, considered South Korea’s No. 2 treasure, is rung 33 times. During the Joseon Dynasty, from 1392 to 1910, the city rang the bell 33 times at 4 a.m. to announce the opening of the city gates.

According to the USFK Web alert, the protest has a low risk level and "is expected to be peaceful."

A Korean policeman confirmed the report late Tuesday afternoon, saying extra riot police would be deployed to the site. He declined to comment on how many riot police would be on the scene due to security concerns.

Court-martial delayed in death of Army wifeThe Army has rescheduled until March the court-martial of an Army officer accused of killing his wife, officials said Tuesday.

Capt. Christopher Gray was to stand trial Jan. 12 at Camp Henry in Daegu, South Korea, but the trial will now begin March 23.

The reason for the postponement could not be immediately learned Tuesday.

Prosecutors have accused the captain of killing Lea Gray, 27, on April 20 in the couple’s Camp George apartment in Daegu and depositing her body along a roadside north of town in Waegwan.

Her body was found May 9 and Christopher Gray was arrested the same day.

Gray is charged with premeditated murder, obstruction of justice and conduct unbecoming an officer.

He remains in pretrial confinement at Camp Humphreys in Pyeongtaek.

A medical examiner found that Lea Gray died of a toxic dose of an antihistamine.

Christopher Gray had been assigned as assistant operations officer with the 25th Transportation Battalion at Camp Henry.
