PYEONGTAEK, South Korea — Workers at Camp Humphreys are building an enlargement to Freedom Chapel that will add much-needed space for worshippers and small group gatherings, officials said.

Set for completion in late February, the $300,000 project began last month and will add a 1,500-square-foot extension to the one-story structure.

The chapel is at the intersection of Freedom Road and Oflahavan Street, across the street from Freedom Field.

It’s used for Protestant, Catholic and Jewish services.

The extension will add room to seat 80 additional worshippers. The existing sanctuary seats 165, and sometimes not enough seating has been available at worship services, officials said.

The extension also will have retractable accordion walls that can divide the space into three separate rooms that can be used for classes, meetings and other gatherings.

The design will provide versatility, said Robert H. McElroy, spokesman for U.S. Army Garrison-Humphreys.

"So if you’re going to have a prayer group which wouldn’t need to use the main sanctuary, this would give them a smaller, more intimate space to use," he said.
