RAF MILDENHALL, England — Snow is in this weekend’s forecast after gale-force winds blew across U.S. bases here on Thursday, bringing with it stinging cold and rain.

Britain’s Met Office — the meteorological service — has issued a warning of possible blizzards, drifting and heavy snow for the U.K. for Friday and Saturday.

Eastern parts of England, where RAFs Lakenheath and Mildenhall are located, have a 60 percent chance of seeing snow accumulate anywhere from 1 to 2 inches by Saturday morning. The heaviest snowfall is predicted in northern parts of the U.K. — between 4 and 8 inches.

At RAF Lakenheath, Thursday’s heavy winds disrupted operations, causing cancellations of much of its F-15 fighter jet flights, spokeswoman Airman 1st Class Torri Ingalsbe said.

Spokesman Master Sgt. Charles Tubbs also said that winds delayed and canceled a few flights at nearby RAF Mildenhall, including its KC-135 Stratotanker refueling missions.

A top wind gust of 62 mph and sustained winds between 34 to 40 mph were reported at Mildenhall, where many advertisement signs and trash bins were blown over, and flags held on to their poles for dear life.

This kind of winter weather is not a surprise to Tech. Sgt. Fambro Knight, weather forecaster for the 100th Operations Support Squadron.

“Icelandic lows move farther down south especially this time of year,” he said.

His crew is predicting no significant accumulation of snow at Mildenhall in the coming days.

“There’s a good likelihood that we’ll see a mixture of rain and snow,” he said, adding that temperatures could get as low as 32 degrees by Saturday morning.

Heavy winds downed trees and disrupted public roads across the country. A 45-year-old man died when wind gusts swept his truck into the central median of the M6 motorway near Tebay, Cumbria, at about 5:30 a.m. Thursday, a BBC news report said.
