A sailor was convicted Wednesday of improperly wearing 10 different honors, including the Bronze Star and Purple Heart, the Washington Times reported Thursday.

Petty Officer 2nd Class Dontae Tazewell was to appear at a sentencing hearing later Thursday.

According to the report, Tazewell told his superiors that he had single-handedly rescued six Marines and recovered the bodies of four others amid heavy enemy fire during a 2003 ambush in Iraq.

His case began in 2006 after he didn’t score high enough for a promotion, which threatened his job with the Navy. He then told his superiors that his former duty station awarded him some honors, including the Purple Heart, the Times reported.

That ostensibly gave him the credentials necessary for a promotion, but his bosses soon challenged his claims upon re-examining his story, the paper noted.

Tazewell was acquitted of an 11th charge of wearing the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation medal with combat V, according to the report.
