Army Maj. Gen. Eric B. Schoomaker, younger brother of former Chief of Staff Gen. Peter Schoomaker, has been nominated by Secretary of Defense Robert Gates to receive his third star and for assignment as the Army’s Surgeon General, the Pentagon announced Tuesday.

Schoomaker, currently serving as the commanding general of the North Atlantic Regional Medical Command, currently is in charge of cleaning up the Army’s problems at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington.

After media reports uncovered wounded Iraq veterans living in poor conditions at the hospital this winter, Army Secretary Francis Harvey fired the hospital’s commander, Maj. Gen. George Weightman. That move prompted the firing of Harvey by Gates. Harvey’s successor, Pete Geren, subsequently named Schoomaker to the Walter Reed job.

The Senate must approve Schoomaker for his new position.
