OSAN AIR BASE, South Korea — High-performance fighter jets will scream through the air at supersonic speeds when Osan Air Base holds its annual air show this weekend.

Osan’s 51st Fighter Wing will hold this year’s Air Power Day from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

The event will be open to all Defense Department identification card holders as well as South Korean military members. Other guests may attend by invitation.

Scheduled events include aerobatics by a variety of combat aircraft, including U.S. and South Korean warplanes, as well as a U.S. Navy F/A-18F demonstration team.

“We’re going to have demonstrations from several different kinds of aircraft, most of which are fully aerobatic, and they’re very noisy — really loud booms, a lot of afterburners. It’s a lot of fun to watch,” 1st Lt. John Ross, 51st Fighter Wing spokesman, said Tuesday. “They fly upside down, which a lot of people love to see.”

The show’s highlight will be a demonstration of combat search- and-rescue techniques involving A-10 Thunderbolt IIs, F-16 Fighting Falcons and HH-60G Pave Hawk helicopters, Ross said.

“That’ll be a coordinated exercise … to demonstrate what our guys go out and do when they’re searching for a downed pilot,” he said.

Also to be featured are ground displays of aircraft, the U.S. Army’s Patriot missile system, and South Korean air defense artillery.

Wing officials said the following items may not be brought on base: pets, skates and skateboards, bicycles, weapons, backpacks, large purses, alcohol and coolers.

Members of the general public may enter base through the Doolittle Gate only, officials said.
