Australia has agreed to host a new U.S. military satellite communications base, its embassy announced Friday.

The facility will be located at the Australian Defence Satellite Communication Station (ADSCS) located at Geraldton on the west coast of Australia, some 250 miles north of the city of Perth, according to a news release posted on the embassy Web site.

Air Force Maj. David Smith, a Pentagon spokesman, confirmed the information in the news release but had no further details.

The new station will be sited within the grounds of ADSCS but will be unrelated to the existing activities which will remain under Australian control, according to the release.

The ground station will form part of the Mobile User Objective System, a satellite-based mobile phone network. MUOS will support U.S. and Australian users, including deployed forces.

The base will consist of three small buildings housing the electronic infrastructure and power station, three 60-foot satellite dishes and two smaller antenna. It will cover an area about the size of three football fields.

The station will be unmanned, according to the news release.
