Natalie Benge recently began work at RAF Lakenheath as the new community relations adviser. The 26-year-old University of Surrey graduate discussed her new posting at the home of the 48th Fighter Wing.
How long have you been here at work at RAF Lakenheath?
Not too long. Three weeks now.
I understand that your partner serves in the Royal Air Force. Where’s he stationed?
He’s just up the road at RAF Wyton.
So the two of you live close to here?
In Peterborough.
Prior to this job, where did you work?
I worked in London for the Ministry of Defence on the London-Saudi Arabia forces project.
Sounds interesting. What was your role?
I was in a business management role and dealt a lot with the visiting Saudis. I was also able to travel to Saudi Arabia several times for the job, which was very interesting.
What excites you about this job?
The variety of the daily workload is amazing. You never know what’s going to come at you. And I get to meet so many interesting people and really help work to strengthen relationships. It’s good job satisfaction.
I’d like to ask a few questions to give readers a chance to gauge your personality. Is that all right with you?
Go ahead.
[Morning radio show hosts] Chris Moyles or Terry Wogan?
Terry Wogan.
[Late night television hosts] Russell Brand or Johnathan Ross?
That’s a tough one because I like them both, but I have to say Johnathan Ross.
For dinner, Chinese or Indian takeaway?
Indian.
What’s the one thing Americans can do while stationed in England to maintain good relations with the local community?
Really, communication is the key. Whether you’re in the shop or on the base, just talking to people and maintaining that open line of communication is crucial.
Three weeks down, how long do you hope to stay here at RAF Lakenheath?
I will definitely be here three years, but I hope to stay on longer. I have lots of family around here and we love this area of the country. We hope to stay a while.
