CAMP FOSTER, Okinawa — The Department of Defense on Friday announced the death of an Okinawa-based Marine killed Tuesday in Anbar province, Iraq.
Sgt. Michael M. Kashkoush, 24, died from wounds received while conducting combat operations in the province, according to the DOD news release. Kashkoush, a counterintelligence specialist, was with Okinawa’s 3rd Intelligence Battalion, 3rd Marine Division, III Marine Expeditionary Force.
Kashkoush, from Chagrin Falls, Ohio, joined the Marine Corps in January 2003 and was promoted to sergeant in July 2005.
“Michael was an honorable young man who served his Corps and his country with the utmost pride and respect,” his family said in a statement, according to the Akron (Ohio) Beacon Journal.
Kashkoush was the second Okinawa-based Marine killed in Anbar province last week. Sgt. Gary S. Johnston, 21, also died in combat Tuesday, according to the DOD.
