A soldier was killed and two others wounded Sunday in an incident at Tompkins Barracks in Heidelberg, Germany, according to a statement from U.S. Army Europe.

The name of the deceased soldier, a member of the 1st Personnel Command in Heidelberg, was not released pending notification of next of kin.

The soldier was pronounced dead at the scene at approximately 5:30 a.m. on Sunday, according to the statement.

The incident occurred at or around 4:45 a.m. Sunday, said Bruce Anderson, a U.S. Army Europe spokesman.

Both of the injured soldiers were transported by German Red Cross personnel to a local hospital, where one of the soldiers, also a member of the 1st Personnel Command, remains hospitalized. The other injured soldier, a member of V Corps Artillery, was treated and released.

A soldier was apprehended by German police in connection with the death at about 7 p.m. Sunday in downtown Schwetzingen and is in U.S. custody, according to the statement. The soldier is considered a suspect in the death but has not been charged, Anderson said. USAREUR won’t release the name of the suspect unless the individual is charged, he said.

No additional details were made available by the Army as of Monday evening.
