On Friday morning, military officials reported no serious damage to U.S. bases in Germany or England as a result of Thursday’s high winds. The worst damage may have been at the entrance to the Air Force’s Vogelweh installation in Kaiserslautern, where winds toppled an electronic sign board.

Some schools in Bavaria and other parts of Germany closed early on Thursday, and Air Force bases in Germany and England halted flight operations, although operations at Ramstein Air Base in southwestern Germany were not affected.

About the only effect that the winds had on the U.S. military community in Europe came in the form of American Forces Network satellite dishes being blown off roofs. A number of customers either e-mailed or called the AFN hotlines to report trouble with their TV reception, said Ann Mulligan, director of broadcasting.
