ARLINGTON, Va. — The U.S. Navy has given the recently decommissioned amphibious transport dock USS Trenton to India, according to the Navy.

The move marks the first time a U.S. Navy vessel has entered service with the Indian navy, a U.S. Navy news release says.

The ship was decommissioned Wednesday in Norfolk, Va., and immediately transferred to the Indian navy as the INS Jalashwa, the news release says.

“Today’s transfer is a significant event in the growing relationship between our two countries and our two navies,” the ship’s new captain, B.S. Ahluwalia, is quoted as saying.

The ship is capable of accommodating a crew of 415 sailors and an additional 1,000 Marines.

The Trenton was commissioned in March 1971 and most recently took place in maritime security operations off the Horn of Africa.

The ship also helped U.S. citizens leave Lebanon during the summer 2006 war between Israel and the Iranian-backed terrorist group Hezbollah, which operates in southern Lebanon.
