YONGSAN GARRISON, South Korea — The Mu Phi Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., is hosting the “Showtime at Yongsan” on Jan. 27 in the Seoul American High School auditorium.

Dubbed as “ONE MIC … One Stage … One Chance,” the event gives community members a chance to showcase their talents. Awards include: $500 for the 1st-place adult; $200 for the runner-up adult; $200 for the 1st-place child; $100 for the 2nd-place child; and $50 for the runner-up child.

Alpha Phi Alpha is the first intercollegiate Greek-letter fraternity established for black members, according to literature provided by chapter members. It was founded on Dec. 4, 1906, at Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y. Its mission is to develop leaders, promote brotherhood and academic excellence and to provide service and advocacy to local communities, according to the literature.

The Mu Phi Lambda Chapter, in Seoul, gave more than $10,000 in scholarships to students from Seoul, Osan and Taegu schools in 2006, according to members.
