A private liberal arts college in Hillsdale, Mich., recently announced the establishment of a scholarship specifically for Marine infantrymen, their children and grandchildren.

Werner J. Gogel established the Werner J. Gogel and Margaret F. Gogel Endowed Scholarship Fund at Hillsdale College in honor of his wife and the Marines he served with in World War II, according to a news release from the college.

The scholarship will provide awards of $9,000 to $25,000 per school year for those eligible. It is designed to stand in for the Montgomery G.I. Bill because the college refuses all federal funding because of its stance against federal funding and regulation of education, according to the release.

USFK warns of possible Seoul protest violenceSEOUL — U.S. Forces Korea officials are warning the military community to avoid potentially violent protests in Seoul this week.

Large-scale demonstrations are expected Monday through Friday as the sixth round of the South Korea-United States Free Trade Agreement talks is held at the Shilla Hotel in the Namsam area, according to a warning on USFK’s Web site.

Officials are expecting members of the Korean Alliance Against the ROK-U.S. FTA and other farmer and labor unions to protest the talks, according to the warning.

Military community personnel also are warned to avoid public transportation in the Namsam area from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. because a “significant number of demonstrators will use public transportation to reach the … site.”
